Egyptian Fatwa on Taxi Drivers Raising Fares

Khaberni - Dr. Ali Fakhr, Secretary of the Fatwa at Dar Al Ifta Al Misriyyah, responded to a question from a citizen from Ash Sharqiyah about the ruling on drivers who increase the fare beyond the rate set by the governorate, explaining that compliance with official decisions is legally and religiously obligatory.

Dr. Fakhr confirmed during the "Fatwas of the People" program, broadcast on "Al Nas" channel, that increasing the fare beyond the rate set by the governorate is not permitted religiously, since the relevant authorities have set the prices according to precise criteria considering the distance and fuel consumption, thus exceeding it is considered disobedience to the ruler and is prohibited.

He clarified that citizens should not remain silent about such practices; instead, they must go to the traffic department or responsible authorities to file a complaint against violating drivers, emphasizing that overlooking this matter consolidates a wrongful reality and leads to recurrent illegal increases.

He pointed out that mutual compliance is obligatory; the driver must adhere to the set fare, and the passenger must pay it in full without shortchanging, noting that there are commendable examples of drivers who consider the passengers’ circumstances, and some waive the fare for those unable to pay.

He emphasized the importance of praising positive examples that adhere to the law and uphold good morals, affirming that showcasing these examples contributes to enhancing proper behavior and encouraging others to emulate them.
