Imamoglu Appears Before Courth in Istanbul for Espionage Investigation

Khaberni - Ekrem Imamoglu, the imprisoned mayor of Istanbul, appeared before the main court in Istanbul today, Sunday, to be investigated in the context of a new investigation recently opened concerning the possibility of his involvement in charges related to espionage.

hundreds of Imamoglu supporters gathered outside the court, expressing their support for the opposition politician who is widely seen as a potentially strong contender against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The investigation, which began two days ago, revolves around allegations of connections between Imamoglu's election campaign and a man who was arrested last July on charges of conducting intelligence activities on behalf of foreign countries.

The investigation also includes questioning his former campaign manager, Necati Ozkan, and journalist Mertan Yanardag.

Imamoglu has been held in custody since last March on corruption charges he denies, and this is the first time he has left Marmara Prison on the outskirts of Istanbul in seven months.

Imamoglu had appeared last month before a court affiliated with Silivri Prison, based on allegations that he obtained a university degree by forgery.

Imamoglu was arrested in March based on allegations of corruption and his links to terrorism, which led to thousands taking to the streets in the largest demonstrations in Turkey in more than a decade.
