Warning for Bubble Tea Lovers

Khaberni - Bubble tea, also known as boba tea or pearl milk tea, has become one of the most popular beverages around the world, particularly due to its appealing appearance on social media. However, a recent report by Consumer Reports has raised concerns after revealing that the tapioca balls that give it its distinctive taste may contain levels of lead.

Bubble tea typically consists of tea, milk or creamer, sweeteners, and tapioca balls made from the cassava plant, which may absorb heavy metals from the soil, including lead, as indicated by the organization.
Tests reveal the results

The organization conducted tests on samples from Gong Cha and Kung Fu Tea chains, as well as pre-made products from Trader Joe's and WuFuYuan.

Researchers found that all samples contained lead, though none exceeded the concerning limit set, and no dangerous levels of arsenic, mercury, or cadmium were observed, according to the New York Post.

Dr. James Rogers, Director of Food Safety Research at Consumer Reports, said: "The levels aren't high enough to completely prohibit consuming bubble tea, but the presence of lead means its consumption should be limited to occasional times and not daily."
Cumulative risks cannot be ignored

The report pointed out that lead is a toxic element that accumulates in the body over time, which may affect neurological and cardiovascular health.

Rogers added: "It’s difficult to avoid lead entirely, as it is present in varying amounts in food, water, and soil, so it is wise to minimize exposure to it as much as possible."

After the results were published, Trader Joe’s announced it would stop selling instant bubble tea packets, while WuFuYuan confirmed that it had begun implementing stricter standards to monitor the quality of its products. Gong Cha and Kung Fu Tea have not yet made any statements.
