Khaberni - The International NFC Forum announced a new update to the Near Field Communication (NFC) standard, which raises the technology's working range from 5 millimeters to 20 millimeters, an increase of approximately fourfold, in a move that opens the door to a smoother wireless future, according to "PhoneArena".
The new update included in NFC Certification Release 15 (CR15) represents a significant leap in the user experience.
Thanks to the extended range, devices such as the iPhone and Apple Watch will be able to perform everyday tasks like electronic payments and opening doors more quickly and easily, without the need for precise alignment between the device and the contact point.
According to the NFC Forum, the extended range will enable more flexible interactions with devices that rely on this technology, including smart locks, hotel rooms, cars, and wireless payment systems.
This means that users will no longer need to stick their phone or watch directly to the reader device; instead, they will be able to execute commands from a further distance and more rapidly.
Despite the excitement for the new technology, the forum explained that benefiting from the extended range requires updates to the physical components of devices, meaning that current versions of Apple devices will not support the new update.
It is expected that the company will integrate the new standard in the upcoming iPhone and Apple Watch models in the coming months, making them among the first to benefit from this development.
A new generation of secure communication
Although the increase in range is only 14 millimeters, its impact will be tangible in daily life, where payment processes, opening of smart doors, and data transfer will become faster and safer compared to Bluetooth or other traditional methods.
Apple is a partner in shaping the future
It is worth noting that major technology companies like Apple and Google are prominent members of the NFC Forum, which reinforces expectations that Apple has participated in developing the new standard, in preparation for officially adopting it in its upcoming devices.
Since its first appearance, NFC technology was considered just an additional feature, but over time it has become an indispensable element in users' daily lives, from Apple Pay services to car keys and smart entry cards.
