Khaberni - The former Queen of Thailand, Sirikit, and the mother of the current king, passed away on Friday at the age of 93, according to a statement from the royal palace.
Sirikit was known for her elegance and her significant influence in the royal family. She was the wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who ruled the country for the longest period between 1946 and 2016.
A statement from the royal palace said, "Her Majesty's health deteriorated on Friday and she passed away at Chulalongkorn Hospital."
The Queen Mother had been suffering from "multiple illnesses" since she was hospitalized in 2019, including a blood infection earlier this month.
In her youth, she was nicknamed "Asia's Jackie Kennedy" and together with her husband, they were an elegant and influential couple that enhanced the status of the royal family among the Thai society.
With her death, the country enters a period of public mourning as the King of Thailand is considered the father of the nation and a symbol of the Buddhist ideal.
The country declared a full year of official mourning upon the death of her husband in October 2016, whose body was cremated a year later in a solemn ceremony.
Queen Sirikit had suffered a stroke that weakened her abilities and she had not been seen publicly for years. However, her pictures still decorate some entrances of public administrations, shops, or even the homes of individuals.
The country celebrated Sirikit's birthday on August 12, as Mother's Day.
Sirikit belonged to the aristocracy, being the daughter of a diplomat and having grown up mainly in Europe, where she met her husband who was studying in Switzerland, marrying him at the age of seventeen.
