An amino acid in meats causes depression

Khaberni - A team of researchers from the Biomedical Research Institute in Girona and Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona found that a type of amino acid found in some foods such as beef and fish causes symptoms of depression in humans.

The researchers confirmed that consuming diets rich in the acid called proline, such as gelatin, beef, and some fish, increases the likelihood of developing depression symptoms.

As part of the study, the researchers measured the amount and type of amino acids consumed by volunteers in the experiment and subjected them to a questionnaire to assess how depressed they felt.

Endocrinologist and head of medical sciences, Dr. Fernandez Rial, said: "We were astonished by the link between proline acid and depression symptoms in the volunteers who participated in the questionnaire."

He added: "Blood tests conducted on the volunteers confirmed the connection between depression and increased plasma levels of proline in the blood."

The researchers pointed out that the results showed the effect of proline acid on the mood of individuals who obtain it, a relationship that was not considered in studies related to depression."

It is worth noting that depression is a disease that affects both the mind and body, influencing the way of thinking and behaving, which can lead to many problems. It is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, usually preventing those affected from continuing their daily lives as usual, and can affect all age groups, without being limited to any specific age, gender, race, or category.
