Dialogue on Arabic Language and Digital Technologies at the Shoman Cultural Forum

The Abdul Hameed Shoman Cultural Forum organized last Wednesday evening, a dialogue titled "Arabic Language and Digital Technologies", where Dr. Ghassan Murad, a researcher in language computing, digital media, and artificial intelligence, spoke.

During the dialogue, which he presented and moderated with the audience Dr. Mahmoud Al Salman, Dr. Murad addressed the issues of Arabic language computing, in addition to digital content issues and their importance in various fields.

He said: "We are immersed in technologies all the time", expressing his hope that these digital technologies will help us solve our problems provided that we handle them wisely, mentioning the stages of development and transition of concepts related to digital evolution from the beginning to the arrival of smart learning and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Murad defined language formally as the primary tool for expression and communication, representing information, explaining that apart from the religious, cultural, social, and intellectual sides, it is a conventional set of phonetic and written symbols and has a set of rules that determine the correct use of linguistic and textual structure, as it is a tool for representing knowledge resulting from thought movement.

He also pointed out that informatics is the scientific, technical, and industrial activity related to the automatic processing of information through the execution of commands by machines such as computers, robots, and others, based on algorithms, clarifying that technologies are the main cause of social, economic, political, and cultural variables.

He added that technologies are present and cannot be dealt with on a methodological basis that avoids thinking of them as something opposing humanity. He added that if we want the Arabic language to be at the required level of keeping up with technological development, it must be processed automatically so that it can ascend and interact in its internal structure, or in terms of its association with modern linguistic theories.

Dr. Murad pointed to the obstacles facing digital content that contradicts the Arab value system, such as information technology that does not fit with the Arab culture, misinformation, and content unsuitable for children, education, and society in general.

Dr. Ghassan Murad, a researcher in language computing, digital media, and artificial intelligence, and formerly the head of the "Center for Studies and Research" at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Lebanese University, and editor-in-chief of the "University Studies Magazine" in Arts and Humanities.
