Khaberni - Tonsil stones are small, hard clumps of calcified debris - formed from food particles, bacteria, and dead cells - that accumulate in the small pits and crevices of the tonsils (called crypts) in the back of the throat.
The bacteria that form the stones also secrete sulfur compounds, which are responsible for the bad odor and sometimes bad taste in the mouth.
According to "Daily Mail," Dr. Phillipa Kaye advises caring for oral and dental health and cleaning between teeth with floss to reduce mouth bacteria.
Tongue Scraper
She adds: "Use a tongue scraper daily. Gargling with warm salt water can also help reduce bacterial buildup."
It is also important to keep the body hydrated, as dry mouth can increase the likelihood of forming tonsil stones.
Treatment of Tonsil Stones
According to "Mayo Clinic," in many cases, tonsil stones can be removed at home.
Here are some methods you can try:
Gargle with warm salt water.
Cough forcefully to try to expel the stones.
Use a cleaning stick to remove the tonsil stones.
Use a cotton swab to gently push out the tonsil stones.
If you are unable to remove them at home, your doctor can remove them during a clinic visit.
