Serious Side Effects of Contraceptive Injections That Threaten the Brain

Khaberni - A new study linked contraceptive methods via injection, which are injected into the muscle by a doctor, with meningioma, which is the most common brain tumor in adults.

In Europe and Canada, it is required that this medication carry a warning, but not in the United States.
What is the likelihood of occurrence?

In a French study conducted in 2024, researchers found that women who used injectable muscle contraceptives for at least one year were 5 times more likely to develop tumors, compared to those who did not use them.

In an extensive American study, published in 2025, users of injectable muscle contraceptives had a 2.43 times higher risk of developing meningioma compared to non-users.

The risk was higher among women who used them for at least 4 years, or who started using them after the age of 31.

Long-term use of hormonal treatment in menopausal women was also associated with an increased risk of developing the condition.
How dangerous is meningioma?

According to "Medical Express", brain tumors are generally serious, but there are different degrees. About 65% to 70% of meningioma cases are grade I tumors. These tumors are non-malignant, and are usually removed surgically or treated with radiation therapy.

If there is any remaining tumor, it can also be treated with radiation therapy.

Up to 95% of grade I patients survive 5 years after the removal, depending on age and the size of the removed tumor.

However, malignant meningioma accounts for about 5% of cases. These grade III tumors are likely to recur, and the 5-year survival rates are lower, at about 50%.
