Saudi Man Sues His ExFiancée Return the Mobile Phone the Ring the Watch and the Court Has Its Say

Khaberni - The Personal Status Court in Saudi Arabia issued a final verdict rejecting a lawsuit filed by a fiancé demanding the return of the gifts he had given to his former fiancée during their engagement, which had a total value of about 9,000 Riyals, including a mobile phone, a gold ring, a watch, and perfumes.

The details of the verdict stated that the fiancé had given the gifts sporadically over an engagement period that lasted about two months, then decided to call off the marriage and return to his previous wife, demanding his fiancée return the gifts or their value.

After considering the lawsuit and hearing both parties, the court decided that the gifts given during the engagement period are the right of the fiancée, and the fiancé is not entitled to reclaim them according to the provisions of the Personal Status Law, thus issuing a final judgment to dismiss the lawsuit.

Lawyer Khaled Abu Rashid clarified that the law explicitly states that the gifts given by one party to the other during the engagement period cannot be reclaimed if the engagement is called off by the party who gave the gifts, affirming that an engagement is merely a promise of marriage and not a binding contract.
