Khaberni - Khaberni - The Iranian presidency announced on Sunday its rejection of the formal invitation sent by Egypt for President Masoud Bazshkian to participate in the international peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, scheduled to be held tomorrow, Monday.
The official IRNA agency reported that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi informed the Iranian government of the invitation extended by Egypt to Bazshkian and the president's refusal to accept it.
For his part, Araghchi said that Iran's initial agreement to the ceasefire in Gaza should not be interpreted as an endorsement of President Donald Trump's policy in the Middle East.
Araghchi explained in his interview with official Iranian television that "Mr. Trump expresses his favored positions in various ways, but they mostly conflict with our ideological beliefs."
He emphasized that Iran's support for the peace initiative aims only to end violence, but he added that the prospects for achieving real peace in the Palestinian territories do not appear near.
Araghchi added that "there is a fundamental difference between the current situation and the future prospects themselves, which remain very unclear," noting that Israel, in particular, has repeatedly failed to adhere to such agreements.
Tomorrow, Monday, Egypt will host an international summit in Sharm El-Sheikh on the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, with more than 20 leaders participating, including President Donald Trump.
The summit is expected to help rally additional international support for Trump's peace plan in Gaza, amid lingering difficult issues related to governance in Gaza post-war, security, and reconstruction.
