Khaberni - In an unusual incident that shocked the residents of Guadeloupe, a 60-year-old man robbed a supermarket under gun threat, but he was not after money, but to see his young grandson.
The incident occurred in Sainte-Rose, north of the Guadeloupe archipelago, where the man, a former firefighter with no criminal record, entered the supermarket wearing a mask and holding a firearm, demanding all the money in the register. During the incident, the man took "a piece of Emmental cheese and a bottle of wine".
After the robbery, the man walked slowly to his car as if he was waiting to be arrested, which indeed happened, as his goal was precisely to enter prison to meet his grandson, who had been beaten by fellow inmates and had a tooth broken, according to Oddity Central.
Lea Le Choufvelier, the man's attorney, said: "He was desperate. He wasn't interested in the money, he just wanted to enter the prison to see his grandson and at least walk with him."
The man appeared before the court on charges of armed robbery, assault, and rebellion, and he confessed to all the incidents. However, the strangeness of his motives left everyone puzzled, including the judge, who decided that the man acted out of desperation, and that he should not pay a steep price for his action.
The man was sentenced to compensate the victims of the robbery, receive psychological treatment, and refrain from visiting the supermarket he robbed, while retaining the legal right to visit his grandson without becoming an inmate.
