Europe Reviews Child Safety Standards on Snapchat and YouTube

Khaberni - The European Commission said on Friday that it is subjecting child protection procedures on platforms such as Snapchat and YouTube, and the Apple "App Store" and Google "Google Play" app stores to audit under the European Union's Digital Services Act.

The Commission is asking the companies to provide information about their systems for verifying users' ages on these platforms.

The Commission is also seeking information on how they prevent minors from accessing unlawful products, including drugs and e-cigarettes, or harmful materials, such as content promoting eating disorders, according to "Reuters".

Hina Virkkunen, the EU's head of technology affairs, said: "Today, in cooperation with national authorities in member states, we are assessing whether the measures taken by the platforms thus far actually protect children."

The Digital Services Act is a significant piece of legislation for the European Union, requiring online platform companies to make more effort to combat illegal and harmful content on their platforms.
