Khaberni - Security forces in Alexandria, Northern Egypt, arrested the head of a district to enforce a judicial ruling issued against him for imprisonment in a bribery case dating back to his earlier administrative work, that occurred just 48 hours after his appointment to the position.
The case, involving the head of East Alexandria District, dates back four years when he was the head of the Mahalla al-Kubra City Council in Gharbia Governorate, with a ruling in absentia for life imprisonment issued last April.
The official was accused of accepting a bribe of 200,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately 420,000 US dollars) for facilitating the processing of financial dues for a company at the governorate regarding contracting works that were executed.
Following his arrest, the Public Prosecutor of the Eastern Alexandria Prosecution Offices referred the district head to the criminal court for retrial, having appealed the ruling issued against him in absentia, and the Public Prosecutor ordered his detention until his appearance in court scheduled for November.
The accused officer, a retired brigadier-general, had held several previous positions; he was the Secretary-General of Luxor Governorate, the head of the Mahalla El-Kubra Center and City, and the Secretary-General of New Valley Governorate, as well as heading other districts in Alexandria Governorate before taking over as head of East District.
