A million people apply to volunteer at the 2026 World Cup

Khaberni - The volunteer program for the 2026 FIFA World Cup witnessed a record number of applications exceeding one million, three days before the deadline.

FIFA stated in a release on its official website, "This impressive number reflects the local, national, and international interest in the global soccer fest set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States between June 11 and July 19, entrusting tasks to about 65,000 volunteers."

The statement added: "Volunteers are the heartbeat of FIFA events, welcoming fans at tournaments, sharing their pride in their countries and their passion for soccer with fans of the beautiful game from around the world, and ensuring all attendees have a seamless soccer experience at the biggest sporting event ever."

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated, "Volunteers embody the heart, soul, and smile of FIFA tournaments, with opportunities to showcase regional pride, experience the tournament from behind the scenes, create lifelong memories and friendships, all while supporting a historic event."

The volunteer community for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest in the history of FIFA events due to the expanded format of the tournament, which will feature 48 teams and competitions held in 16 host cities across three countries.

Infantino explained, "Volunteers range in age from 18 to 92, from students starting their life journey to retirees eager to share their skills and experiences. Everyone has a story they want to tell; it is truly the most diverse community in the world."

FIFA confirmed in its statement that no previous volunteering experience is required to join the program, which includes 23 categories involving official and non-official sites related to the tournament, including stadiums, training facilities, airports, and hotels.

After the deadline on October 10, the volunteer team will begin a selection process to choose 65,000 volunteers and assign their roles; those selected will undergo training to be fully prepared to welcome the millions heading to North America for the anticipated competitions.
