Washington is the biggest supporter of Taiwan on the international stage despite the absence of formal relations between them. However, since taking office this current year, Trump has not announced any new arms sales to the island.

Trump may meet with Xi during this current month, and foreign policy experts and the Taiwanese people are worried that he may not be as committed to defending the island as previous American presidents were, and he may offer Beijing concessions for a major trade deal.

Lai mentioned during his talk this week on the "Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show," which is broadcast on over 400 radio stations and adopts conservative viewpoints, Trump’s comments in August indicating that Xi told him China would not invade Taiwan during his American presidency.

China has not abandoned the use of force to subdue Taiwan, as it always sends its military to the waters surrounding the island and to fly in its airspace.
