Khaberni - Italian police arrested a mafia leader on Tuesday, who had been on the run for the past five years, and apprehended him in the city of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeastern Italy.

According to the "German News Agency", the police stated that the man's location (39 years old) was identified in the outskirts of the city after months of investigation and a significant deployment of forces.

The suspect was linked to the Foggia mafia or "Società Foggiana," a mafia organization in the Apulia region focusing on the city of Foggia and surrounding areas. It is involved in waste collection, arms trade, prostitution, and armed robbery operations.

The police said that the detained mafia leader was caught by surprise while sleeping and surrendered without a fight. A pistol with its serial number removed and loaded with six rounds was found with him.

The man had previously been sentenced to 12 years in prison for mafia-related crimes.
