Khaberni - The "Primassasa" stadium in Colombo witnessed a peculiar situation during the Women's Cricket World Cup match between India and Pakistan, when the referees and players were forced to stop playing due to a dense swarming of insects.
The problem began in the first minutes of the match, as the insects were flying annoyingly around the pitch, especially near the bowling area, causing clear discomfort to the players.
From her side, the captain of the Pakistan team, Fatima Sana, intervened herself, holding a bottle of insecticide to try to control the situation, after one of the substitutes failed to reduce the spread of insects.
Her initial attempt was not successful, hence a specialized team was called in to deal with the problem using powerful spraying devices, which led to the temporary exit of the players from the field.
Despite the efforts of the combat teams, the insects continued to be a nuisance, leading to several stops in play, one of the most notable when one of the insects penetrated the glasses of the player Ramin Shmeem during a throw.
This incident reflected a humorous aspect in the circulating comments, as commentators described the situation with its unusual nature unprecedented in cricket matches, considering that stopping an international women's match due to insects is unusual.
Meanwhile, some Indian fans exaggerated the situation and believed that Fatima Sana "was intentionally spraying the Indian players," which sparked anger and criticism on social media, although the actual intention was merely to keep the insects away from the field, not to target the opposing team.
Eventually, the match resumed, and the Indian team managed to secure a victory by 88 points, while the Pakistan team remained point-less in the tournament.
