The Red Cross Expresses Its Readiness to Serve as a Neutral Mediator for the Return of Prisoners Held by Hamas

Khaberni - The International Committee of the Red Cross has expressed its readiness to assist in reuniting families and facilitating the delivery of aid to Gaza.

The Committee stated, "Our teams are ready to work as a neutral mediator to assist in the repatriation of prisoners and detainees to their families."

Delegations from Hamas, Israel, and the United States will start indirect talks in Egypt on Monday to achieve the release of detainees in Gaza and end the ongoing war that has lasted nearly two years in the devastated Palestinian territory.

Negotiators are expected to meet in Sharm el-Sheikh on the eve of the second anniversary of Hamas' unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in the Gaza Strip.

About a week after announcing his plan concerning the besieged sector, the American President increased pressure on the negotiators.

The American President urged the negotiators on Sunday to "make rapid progress," referring to "very positive initial talks (...) during the weekend with Hamas" before the talks in Egypt, to which he sent his special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The American plan was revealed on September 29 and stipulates a ceasefire and the release within 72 hours of all detainees since the Hamas attack and the gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip and the disarmament of Hamas.

Trump, who said he wants the first stage, which involves releasing all detainees starting from this week, warned Hamas that he "will not accept any delays" in implementing the plan.

Hamas told Agence France-Presse on Sunday that it is "very keen to reach an agreement to stop the war and start immediately the process of exchanging prisoners according to the field conditions."

On Monday, a Hamas leader told Agence France-Presse that the movement's delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, who arrived in Egypt on Sunday evening, "will hold preliminary meetings this morning with the Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo before starting the round of indirect negotiations with the Israeli delegation" later on Monday.

He confirmed that the indirect talks "will discuss mechanisms for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces and exchange of prisoners" as well as "the timing of the start of the first phase of President Trump's plan specifically for prisoner exchange, and negotiations will be held to determine the timing of the temporary truce to facilitate the field conditions for the start of the exchange process."
