Khaberni - On Sunday, Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara checked the progress of the People's Council elections in the capital, Damascus, emphasizing that these elections represent "an important step in the path of the transitional phase" that the country is going through after years of conflict.
Al-Shara said in a brief speech during his tour of several polling centers: "Within a few months, we managed to enter into a new electoral process, and the Syrians are proud to move from a stage of war and chaos to a stage of institutions and elections."
The Syrian President added that "the task of building Syria is a shared responsibility among all its children," noting that the current elections "come in the context of a political process aimed at consolidating stability and filling the constitutional vacuum in the country."
Al-Shara confirmed that Syrian laws "need amendments to keep up with the requirements of the new stage," pointing out that "there is a group of pending laws that need to be voted on and progressed in implementing them to ensure the continuation of the state-building process."
These elections are the first since the initiation of the transitional phase announced following the political understandings among Syrian powers, and are conducted under the supervision of a high national committee to monitor the integrity of the electoral process, with participation from observers from Arab and international organizations.
Voting centers in Damascus and several other Syrian provinces have been experiencing varied turnout since the morning hours, where hundreds of candidates are competing for the 250 seats of the People's Council.
