The Lebanese Army Issues Its First Official Statement After Fadel Shaker Surrenders Himself

Khaberni - The command of the Lebanese Army announced in an official statement that the wanted Fadel Abdel Rahman Shmandar, known as "Shaker", handed himself in on the evening of Saturday, October 4 (October), to a patrol from the Directorate of Intelligence at the entrance of Ain El-Hilweh camp in Sidon.

The first official statement confirmed that this step came as a result of a series of communications between the army and the relevant authorities, following the events of Abra, which took place in 2013.

The statement mentioned that the investigation with Fadel Shaker began immediately under the supervision of the competent judiciary, with confirmation that the official procedures will be carried out according to Lebanese law.

On the other hand, news circulated in the past few hours, about the intervention of a Gulf state to resolve the crisis of the Lebanese artist and end years of suffering in Ain El-Hilweh camp, in order to obtain acquittal from the charges directed at him.

These developments come after years of waiting and postponement, making Shaker's file attract widespread local and Arab attention due to the judicial and security nature of the case.

The roots of Fadel Shaker's case go back to the events of Abra, which occurred in June 2013 in Lebanon, where clashes erupted between supporters of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Assir and the army in the town of Abra near Sidon, following an attack on a military checkpoint.

The battles resulted in the death of 18 soldiers and 11 gunmen, and ended with the army taking control of a complex used by Al-Assir and his supporters, including Fadel Shaker, as their headquarters, and Shaker has been hiding in Ain El-Hilweh camp since then.

The military judiciary issued two absentee verdicts against Shaker in 2020, the first sentencing him to 15 years in prison with hard labor and stripping him of his civil rights after convicting him of "engaging in criminal terrorist activities committed by terrorists with his knowledge, by providing logistical services to them", and the second sentencing him to 7 years in prison with hard labor and a financial fine for financing Al-Assir's group and spending on its members and securing the price of weapons and ammunition.

A Gulf state has entered into the ongoing crisis between Lebanese artist Fadel Shaker and the Lebanese Ministry of Defense, aiming to settle his legal and military file which has been pending for more than a decade.

The Lebanese authorities listed Shaker on the wanted list, and issued arrest warrants against him, with intensified security efforts to locate him and deliver him to justice.

Shaker had previously declared his innocence through his lawyers, asserting his non-participation in firing at the army during the battles known at the time as "Abra events".
