Khaberni - Hair naturally falls out and thins as we age, and while hormonal changes often contribute to this, many non-hormonal strategies can restore its density.
One of the main factors is the shrinkage of hair follicles with age, leading to finer strands and a generally thinner appearance. Moreover, the hair growth cycle loses its efficiency over time.
In this report from the Independent newspaper, hair experts share their insights on the reasons for hair changes and how to restore its vitality and density without hormonal intervention.
Annabelle Kingsley, senior trichologist at Philip Kingsley Clinic, says, "Just as our skin color in our forties, fifties and beyond differs from our twenties, so does our scalp and hair follicles age, affecting the quality of the hair strands it produces. The hair becomes finer, and hair growth slows down compared to the period when it is calm and falls out."
Estrogen hormone
She continues, "The most hair loss occurs just before menopause." This is due to decreased levels of estrogen, a strong supporter for hair.
These hormonal changes, along with poor blood flow to the scalp and slow cell renewal, contribute to hair loss.
Are there effective non-hormonal treatments?
Kingsley explains, "Topical or oral minoxidil is the most effective non-hormonal treatment for pattern hair loss in women."
She adds, "Microneedling may also help, but I recommend doing this with a dermatologist to avoid damaging the scalp, and it is more effective when used with minoxidil."
Minoxidil is a topical treatment applied to the scalp to stimulate hair growth, but it may take two to four months for effects to appear. It also maintains hair growth, meaning that once you stop using it, the regrown hair may fall out within 3 months.
Natural Ingredients
Natural ingredients can also stimulate hair growth. According to Kingsley, "A combination of topical melatonin, caffeine, and peptides is also effective. While these treatments may not be as effective as drug treatments, they may help."
Enanche Emir, co-founder of Enanche London specializing in hair, supports this view, adding, "Peptides — or stem cell-based serums — stimulate hair follicle activity."
Products fortified with caffeine can help activate hair roots. In addition, supplements of biotin, niacin, and zinc enhance hair health from within.
Rosemary Oil
She also says, "Topical rosemary oil (rosemary oil) has shown in some studies to be as effective as minoxidil."
Experts believe that massaging the scalp "will not help grow new hair but can promote a healthy scalp by reducing stress, encouraging healthy blood flow, and alleviating tension."
Hair Care Habits
Kingsley advises, "Use volumizing shampoos for a denser appearance. Drying your hair upside down or against its growth direction can add a great lift to the roots."
Hair thickening products are also great, Kingsley continues, "Use a root-boosting foam to add density to the roots, and spray a dense protein spray onto the middle length and ends of your hair to add a textured feel."
Experts recommend "regular hair trimming as it is necessary to remove thin hair, and any split ends or damage that makes the hair look thinner."
