Khaberni - OpenAI has launched a new feature that enables users to make direct purchases via "Chat GPT", starting from Etsy and Shopify stores.
This service, named "Instant Checkout", focuses on simplifying the digital shopping experience without the need to leave the conversation or move to external links, which opens a new revenue stream for the company alongside the traditional subscription model.
This update allowed users of "Chat GPT Plus" and "Pro", and even free subscribers in the United States, to buy products directly from Etsy sellers, while OpenAI is working on adding over a million sellers on the Shopify platform, including well-known brands such as Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori.
The service began with support for purchasing a single item per transaction, with future plans to expand options for multi-item baskets and cover additional regions.
The announcement of this feature led to a 7.3% increase in Etsy's stocks and a 4.5% increase in Shopify's stocks listed in the United States.
Shopify confirmed that merchants would be able to sell directly through chats, without any redirects or external links, offering a seamless shopping experience.
Meanwhile, the head of product and technology at Etsy, Raf Colburn, explained that AI-powered shopping represents a significant opportunity to enhance product discovery within digital experiences on mobile devices, in collaboration with an undisclosed technology partner.
OpenAI added that it would provide the AI-supported commerce protocol as open-source, relying on the payment partner Stripe, to facilitate secure and efficient payment transactions.
