Khaberni -American influencer Madeline May, aged 23, was placed in the intensive care unit on life support after contracting a rare and serious fungal infection, which was later found to have resulted from inhaling fungi while smoking a cigarette containing a mix of marijuana and tobacco.
According to her statements, the crisis began after her first smoking experience in her teenage years, when she experienced severe shortness of breath after smoking her first cigarette, and lost consciousness within minutes, necessitating her urgent transfer to the hospital.
Later medical examinations showed that her lungs had been invaded by the deadly Aspergillosis fungus, leading to acute respiratory failure, and the infection spread to her lungs, sinuses, and ears, resulting in her undergoing eight bronchoscopic surgeries, and requiring daily use of an oxygen tube for more than a year.
May noted that the doctors were initially unable to determine the cause, until she remembered and reported the incident of her smoking for the first time to the medical team, who confirmed that the cigarette was the likely cause of the transmission of the fungi into her respiratory system.
After years of treatment and rehabilitation, Madeline partially recovered, and decided to document her health journey on social media, eventually becoming a successful content creator earning an estimated two million dollars annually, affirming that she would never approach any form of smoking again.
