Khaberni -A new study reports that changing one's diet can reduce the risk of suffering from chronic constipation in middle age and among the elderly.
The study found that the Mediterranean diet and vegetarian diets are best for preventing constipation.
Whereas the traditional Western diet increases the risk of chronic constipation, according to "Health Day".
Easing Constipation and Prevention
It is known that healthy diets relieve constipation, but this is the first study to show that some diets may actually be able to prevent it in the first place.
In this study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, researchers analyzed data from nearly 96,000 participants who participated in three studies, with follow-up lasting four years.
The researchers analyzed the diets of the participants based on their adherence to 5 different dietary patterns: the Mediterranean diet, the low-carb diet, the Western diet, the vegetarian diet, and the diet aimed at reducing inflammation.
Effective Diets
The results showed that vegetarian diets reduced the risk of constipation by 20%, while Mediterranean diets reduced the risk by 16%.
The Mediterranean diet focuses on the consumption of plenty of vegetables, fruits, legumes, lentils, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and herbs and spices.
Dairy products, fish, and poultry are consumed a few times a week, while red and processed meats are consumed less frequently.
On the other hand, the Western diet, rich in red and processed meats, refined grains, fatty foods, and sugary sweets, increased the risk of chronic constipation by 22%.
While a diet rich in foods that increase inflammation increased the risk by 24%.
