Khaberni - The announcement by Palestinian artist Mohammad Assaf to cancel the rest of his concert tour in the United States stirred questions on social media platforms, especially after the spread of a video clip from one of his last concerts showing him interacting with a discussion by one of the attendees about Palestinian camps.
Assaf announced in a video posted on his official Instagram account that he is canceling the remaining concerts of his tour in the United States, attributing the decision to organizational conflicts between the contractor and the organizing party and circumstances beyond his control, while affirming his commitment to the agreements and his eagerness to continue the tour and meet his audience.
The Palestinian artist explained that he received a notification that it was not possible to hold the remaining concerts, expressing his regret and apologies to the audience who had booked their tickets and awaited meeting him.
Assaf affirmed his commitment to meet his audience and complete all the agreed upon concerts, expressing his regret for ending the tour this way, and said, "I apologize to everyone who booked and waited and was looking forward to meeting us, I hope we can meet soon in a new tour worthy of your love and trust, my love and appreciation for you always".
The announcement of the tour cancellation came after his last concert in the United States, which witnessed an interaction with the audience, and during which Assaf spoke about his Palestinian identity and his connection to the camps, in response to one of the attendee's comments.
During the concert, Assaf said, "I am a son of the camps, but originally Palestinian," after one of the attendees asked him to send greetings to the camps, in a moment that was widely shared on social media platforms later.
Bloggers and activists reshared the clip, and some linked what happened during the concert to the announcement of the rest of the American tour cancellation, wondering whether the stance had played a role in the decision, although Assaf clarified in his announcement that the cancellation was due to organizational conflicts and circumstances beyond his control.
Some followers interpreted Assaf's comments as an affirmation that the Palestinian identity, in his view, transcends the divisions associated with regions or camps, pointing to his statement that what unites the Palestinians is Palestine.
Conversely, other posts carried a different interpretation of the scene, with their authors believing that Assaf's statements were a response to one of the attendees' discussion, and that his talk about the camps was in the context of affirming his Palestinian identity, not commenting on any particular entity.
Others focused on the timing of the clip spread in conjunction with the announcement of the remaining concerts' cancellation, which opened the door to speculations about a possible connection between the two events, although Assaf did not indicate in his announcement that his stand during the concert was the reason behind the tour's cancellation.
It is worth noting that Mohammad Assaf's North American concert tour started in Toronto, Canada, before moving to the United States, where he performed several concerts.
The tour was scheduled to continue until its conclusion in Puerto Rico on November 20th, but the cancellation decision included the remaining stops which were supposed to include several American states, including Texas, Arizona, and California.
