Netanyahu attacked in his speech those who withdrew from the assembly hall, claiming that Israel defends many of the countries whose representatives left.
Reuters reported that Netanyahu's quick visit to New York reflects the tension in relations between Israel and Washington.
The agency quoted Israeli officials saying that Netanyahu's visit to New York would not exceed 8 hours, after which he would return to Israel.
Michael Oren, former Israeli Ambassador to Washington, said, "I do not remember a single occasion when an Israeli Prime Minister came to the United States and did not meet with the President," adding that he is sure Netanyahu felt disappointed.
