American President Donald Trump directed sharp criticism at Google for its plans to build a massive factory in Finland, and he dismissed recent concerns about the risks that the development of artificial intelligence technologies could cause.
Trump stated in a post on Truth Social on Monday that he is "not happy" with Google's plans to establish a factory in Finland because they found it "extremely difficult" to obtain the necessary permits to build this factory in the United States, as he described, and he demanded Google reconsider its decision.
In his post, Trump affirmed that artificial intelligence and data centers will be "the greatest driver of economic growth in history, surpassing oil, gold, diamonds, and even the internet," adding that "destructive powers that are skillfully managed will not be able to stop it during President Trump's term."
Criticism of Warnings About Artificial Intelligence
Trump rejected in his post the warnings issued by leaders in artificial intelligence technologies about the dangers that could arise from it, and he questioned in his post, "When has the history of business ever seen leaders in a sector demanding legislation that regulates it in a way that could lead to their bankruptcy if enforced strictly?"
Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, published an article on Saturday calling for leading companies in artificial intelligence to slow down its development, just days after one of the company's researchers warned that those developing the technologies in this field "are gambling with our lives."
Similarly, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, clarified to his employees that he is ready to slow the pace of developing artificial intelligence to ensure control over the potential risks that may arise from it.
Researchers at both Anthropic and OpenAI, two leading companies in artificial intelligence development, wrote about the dangers of "self-improvement" of advanced models and the possibility of them getting out of control.
"Just a Trick"
Trump added in his post that "the idea of artificial intelligence taking over the world and annihilating humanity, among other bad outcomes, is just a trick," clarifying that it resembles rumors about Russia and Ukraine or attempts to impeach him, and all these, according to him, are just "tricks".
He mentioned that Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that "China will not do anything at all to stand in the way of artificial intelligence or its future".
The Nasdaq-100 index for technology companies at the New York Stock Exchange fell on Monday, after shares of major companies such as Nvidia for producing electronic chips, dropped amid concerns from investors that slowing the development of artificial intelligence could lead to a decrease in sales of the companies developing it, and thus a decrease in their ability to generate profits.
Shares of technology companies in Europe and Asia also fell amidst the uncertainty about the limits of developing artificial intelligence in the coming period and its impact on the sales of companies operating in this field.
