Khaberni - The rescue authority in Indonesia announced on Sunday the death of one person in the sinking of an Indonesian ferry and the rescue of 102 passengers.
Connection was lost with a ferry carrying 243 passengers while it was sailing through bad weather from Surabaya in Indonesia to another coastal city, according to the rescue authority.
The head of the search and rescue office in Banjarmasin said, "We received a report about the loss of contact with the ship (Virgo Transport 8) and immediately deployed personnel and the rescue ship 'Laksamana 241' to the last known location based on estimates."
The search and rescue office in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province, reported receiving information that the ship had experienced a communication failure while en route to the city from Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia, located in East Java province.
Initial information indicated that the last known location of the ship was in the Java Sea, about 148 kilometers from a dock in Banjarmasin.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The authorities said that the ship's operator reported the incident after receiving information that the ship had encountered bad weather.
It is noted that Indonesia, an archipelago comprising 17,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries as a primary mode of transportation, as maritime routes are less expensive and more available than air travel.
However, safety standards are not always strictly applied, leading to a relatively high accident rate.
