The Hijri Calendar
The Hijri calendar is based on the lunar month, which represents the time it takes for the moon to complete a full orbit around the Earth.
The months of the Hijri year consist of: Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah.
The Hijri calendar is also known as the lunar or Islamic calendar, and it relies on the moon's cycle to determine the months. Some Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, officially adopt it as the state calendar.
Caliph Umar bin Al-Khattab established the Hijri calendar, basing the start of the Hijri year on the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina, and hence it was named the Hijri calendar.
