Elon Musk proposes the idea of blocking the sun to combat global warming

Khaberni - American billionaire Elon Musk has put forward an unconventional idea to combat the rising temperatures of Earth, centered on deploying huge numbers of AI-supported satellites into space, aiming to reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching our planet.


The idea, which is still in the realm of theoretical concepts and not a project in development, relies on placing a system of satellites between the Earth and the sun to block part of the sunlight and control the amount of solar energy reaching the Earth's surface.

Satellites at Lagrange point
According to the proposed concept, these satellites could be placed at Lagrange points, which are areas in space that allow objects to maintain relatively stable orbital positions relative to other celestial bodies.

Artificial intelligence systems would manage and control the positioning and movement of the satellites, allowing adjustment of the blocked solar radiation as needed.

The idea is in principle similar to some climate engineering proposals that look into reducing the amount of solar energy reaching the Earth as a means to mitigate rising temperatures.

Launching satellites from the Moon
One of the most ambitious parts of the concept involves using the Moon to manufacture and launch a large number of these satellites.

The concept proposes the use of what is known as a "mass slingshot", an electromagnetic system that can accelerate objects and launch them into space without needing traditional rockets for each launch.

Musk has previously discussed manufacturing space infrastructure components on the Moon and using electromagnetic launch systems to reach space, as part of his vision to expand the use of solar energy and computing in space.

Can Earth's temperature be reduced?
The theoretical goal of such systems is to reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching Earth, thereby limiting the rise in temperatures caused by global warming.

However, implementing the idea on a planetary scale faces immense engineering and scientific challenges, starting from manufacturing and transporting huge numbers of satellites, and not ending at controlling a space system of this size and maintaining its stability over long periods.

There are already independent scientific studies exploring the possibilities of blocking parts of the sunlight from space. In July 2026, NASA announced a research concept named "DimSun", which aims to reduce the solar radiation reaching Earth by about 1.16% using a controlled dust cloud at the Lagrange point L1 between Earth and the sun.

From a theoretical idea to a distant reality

While using satellites and artificial intelligence to control solar radiation might seem closer to science fiction, parts of the technological infrastructure associated with the idea have indeed become subjects of research and development.

Currently, satellites at the Lagrange point L1 are monitoring the sun and solar wind, among them the American satellite SOLAR-1, which is positioned about a million miles from Earth towards the sun.

Nonetheless, turning the idea of "sun-blocking" into an actual system for controlling Earth's climate is still very far off, and raises significant questions alongside technical challenges about the environmental impacts and potential risks of deliberately controlling the amount of solar energy reaching the planet.
