Khaberni - Samir Al-Mashharawi, the deputy leader of the Democratic Reform Current in the Fatah movement (Dahlan's faction), described the meeting of a delegation from the faction with a delegation from the Fatah movement on Monday in the city of El Alamein, Egypt as positive, emphasizing that the meeting is part of ongoing Egyptian efforts to unify the Fatah movement.
Al-Mashharawi explained that the El Alamein meeting is not the first hosted by Cairo in the context of efforts to unify the movement, noting that the meeting discussed the situation of the Fatah movement and ways to unify it, in addition to developments in Gaza and the West Bank.
In a television interview, he said that unifying the Fatah movement can only be achieved through decisions and procedures, considering that the national level requires decisions from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
He pointed out that the Democratic Reform Current (led by expelled leader Mohammed Dahlan) presented during the meeting a set of points that, in his opinion, would contribute to unifying the Fatah movement and achieving national unity, adding that the Fatah delegation will present the points raised to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen.
Multiple media outlets reported that the Fatah delegation was led by Hussein Al-Sheikh, the vice president of the Palestinian.
Electoral Alliances
On another note, Al-Mashharawi stated in the text of the statement that any alliances in the upcoming Palestinian elections do not target the Fatah movement or its leadership.
This statement comes as some observers see the Palestinian arena moving towards electoral alliances, with talks of a possible convergence to form an extensive list that includes the Democratic Reform Current in the Fatah movement led by Mohammed Dahlan and Hamas, as well as other Palestinian factions and figures.
These movements come after Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree on July 9 calling for legislative elections to be held on November 28, in the first legislative elections since January 2006, which produced the last elected legislative council in which Hamas won a majority of the seats.
