Khaberni - The spokesman for the National Security Committee in the Iranian Parliament, Hassan Qashqawi, said today, Sunday, that mediators are seeking to revive the memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad, which briefly halted the war between Iran and the United States in June.
In a statement given in a recorded interview, Qashqawi said, "There are ongoing efforts, especially from the mediators, to revive the Islamabad agreement composed of 14 articles." He continued, "They know that the main issue, indeed the basis of the matter now, is the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, so yes, there is an exchange of views."
The Islamabad memorandum of understanding was reached through Qatari and Pakistani mediation during negotiation rounds held in Islamabad. It included arrangements related to the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington to reach a broader agreement. It also stipulated the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, where Israel is fighting Hezbollah, supported by Iran.
The memorandum of understanding later collapsed after Iran and the United States exchanged accusations of violating its terms.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States and Israel agreed to suspend the planned strikes on Iran at the request of Tehran and other countries in the region, conditional on reaching a quick agreement. Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social on Saturday: "I agreed, for the future interest of the world and the sustainment of Iran as a successful and thriving state, to cancel the attack, conditional on reaching a quick agreement," adding "Israel shares this commitment."
Qashqawi, a former diplomat, said there is "always an exchange of views and discussion about the proposals," without going into any details.
