Khaberni - In a rare and complex surgical operation, Iraqi plastic and reconstructive surgery specialist Dr. Diyar Abdulwahid in Sulaymaniyah managed to reconstruct the nose of a worker who suffered a severe injury from a high-voltage electric shock, which damaged about 99% of his nose.
According to Iraqi media, Dr. Abdulwahid explained that the accident caused severe burns that nearly completely damaged the nose, leaving no healthy tissue to rely on for direct reconstruction in its natural position.
Creating a New Nose
After conducting necessary medical examinations and assessments, the surgical team decided to use an advanced reconstructive technique, which involved creating a new nose using forehead skin tissue, to be later transferred to its natural position during a second surgical stage.
The forehead was chosen due to the close similarity between the color and characteristics of its skin and the natural skin of the nose, which helps achieve better results both aesthetically and functionally.
Iraqi media reported Dr. Diyar Abdulwahid as saying, "In the first stage of the procedure, we created the outer cover of the nose, which consists of skin and muscles. In the second stage, we implanted cartilage taken from the rib cage, along with rebuilding the nasal septum. Now, we have begun the third stage of the procedure, which is the reconstruction and alignment of the inner cover of the nose."
He added, "Regarding the patient's condition, we saved him socially, psychologically, and health-wise, his condition is stable, thank God, and he is still in good health to this day."
Precise Operation
The doctor emphasized that this technique is among the precise and complex reconstructive surgeries, requiring high expertise and skill, especially in cases where there is almost complete loss of tissue.
The procedure highlights the capability of modern reconstructive surgeries to rebuild organs that have suffered severe damage, even in cases where the surgical options seem extremely limited.
This operation is the second of its kind in the world, after China, and the forehead was chosen for its biological suitability in terms of tissue nature and its match with nasal tissues.
