Khaberni - The Egyptian government, on Thursday, approved the extension of the remote work system on Sundays every week throughout August 2026.
This decision is a continuation of the measures aimed at optimizing energy consumption and enhancing operational efficiency within governmental entities.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, where approval was given for a resolution that ensures the continuation of the provisions of Prime Ministerial Decree No. 982 for the year 2026, which regulates the application of the remote work system for employees of establishments and entities covered by the decision.
Continuation of measures through August
The new decision stipulates the continued implementation of the work-from-home system on Sundays each week throughout August 2026, concerning employees of the entities and establishments defined by the Prime Ministerial Decree No. 982 for the year 2026.
The resolution is part of the government's policy aimed at reducing electricity and energy consumption, whilst maintaining the regular flow of work and services provided to citizens.
A Continuation of a Previous Decision
The cabinet's decision represents a continuation of measures previously implemented over the past months, as the government had earlier extended the same system through June 2026, before later deciding to continue it in subsequent periods, amid ongoing implementation of the energy conservation plan.
The government relies on remote work as one of the tools contributing to the reduction of electricity and fuel consumption within government buildings, without impacting the efficiency of performance or public services.
Why Does the Government Implement Remote Work?
The government aims to reduce energy consumption within governmental entities, in conjunction with increased electrical loads during the summer and higher temperatures, alongside enhancing the efficiency of government facilities' operations.
The decision also comes as part of a series of measures implemented by the state to manage energy demand, and ensure the stability of the electricity system during peak months.
Countries that Preceded Egypt in Implementing Remote Work
Egypt is not the only country that has moved toward expanding remote work to reduce energy consumption, as several countries have adopted similar measures recently.
Indonesia implemented a weekly work-from-home day within government entities, while the Philippines adopted a four-day workweek system to reduce fuel and energy consumption.
Vietnam encouraged employees to work from home, and Thailand took measures to conserve electricity within government institutions, while Pakistan implemented remote work for half of its public sector employees as part of an emergency plan to address energy market disruptions.
