Jordan Advances 23 Positions in the Global Environmental Performance Index for 2026

Khaberni - Jordan has achieved a new environmental milestone by advancing 23 positions on the Global Environmental Performance Index (Environmental Performance Index – EPI) for 2026, issued by Yale University, to occupy the 54th position globally among 177 countries, compared to rank 77 in the 2024 report, in an accomplishment that reflects the ongoing improvement in the Kingdom's performance in areas of environmental protection and sustainability.

This progress is the fruit of national efforts led by the Ministry of Environment, in partnership with various ministries and national institutions, and supported by international partners, to implement the targets of the economic modernization vision, especially the sustainable environment engine, focusing on improving the quality of the environment, sustainable management of natural resources, enhancing climate action, and accelerating the shift to a green economy, which contributes to improving the quality of life and enhancing Jordan's competitiveness at both regional and international levels.

The Global Environmental Performance Index is based on three main components: ecosystems, climate action, and health and reduced air pollution, and is considered one of the most prominent international indicators that measure countries' performance in achieving sustainability goals and the efficacy of environmental policies.

According to the report, Jordan ranked 54th globally on the overall index, advancing 23 positions compared to the 2024 report. It also ranked 108th globally in the ecosystems component and achieved the 54th rank globally in the climate action component, advancing 20 positions from the previous report, while recording its best results in the health and reduced air pollution component, advancing 29 positions to reach the 49th rank globally.

Minister of Environment Ayman Sulaiman confirmed that this progress reflects the effectiveness of the environmental policies and reforms implemented by the government, and the progress made in implementing national programs related to climate action, sustainable management of natural resources, improving air quality, and enhancing the environmental governance system, in line with the targets of the economic modernization vision and national and international commitments of the Kingdom.

Sulaiman pointed out that the Global Environmental Performance Index is one of the priority international indicators that the ministry works on monitoring and improving Jordan's performance within the economic modernization vision indicators system, given its role as a global reference for measuring countries' environmental performance, and reflecting the impact of national policies in achieving sustainable development and enhancing Jordan's position at the regional and international levels.

Ayman Sulaiman affirmed that this achievement embodies Jordan's commitment to moving forward in implementing the economic modernization vision, and establishing the environment as one of the main drivers for sustainable development, considering that investing in the environment has become a fundamental pillar to enhance economic growth, attract investments, improve the quality of life, and strengthen Jordan's ability to tackle environmental and climate challenges.

Sulaiman also expressed his gratitude and appreciation for all national and international partners, from ministries, governmental institutions, international organizations, and supporting bodies, for their cooperation and efforts that contributed to achieving this accomplishment, reaffirming that the progress made by Jordan reflects the success of the partnership and integration approach among various entities, and that the ministry will continue to work with all partners to enhance national environmental performance and achieve further advancement in global environmental indicators, thereby consolidating Jordan's position as a regional model in environmental work and sustainable development.
