120 deaths in the latest cholera outbreak in Sudan

Khaberni - The World Health Organization reported on Wednesday that the latest cholera outbreak in Sudan resulted in the deaths of 120 people, in addition to recording 1102 suspected cases.
The ongoing war for more than 3 years between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has led to a significant deterioration in the country's health sector.
The current wave of cholera, the third in 3 years, started just two months after the previous outbreak was declared over in March.
According to government figures, more than 124,400 people have been infected with cholera and 3500 have died during the latest wave between July 2024 and March 2026.
Shebl Sahbani, head of the World Health Organization in Sudan, said that cholera, which spreads in Northeast Africa, used to occur in cycles every 3 years, but the country is now facing a nearly continuous outbreak "due to conflict and restrictions on access to certain areas and the shortage of supplies."
It is expected that cases will worsen with the approach of the rainy season, at a time when millions lack clean water and increased rainfall makes it difficult to access affected areas.
The World Health Organization said that the outbreak seems to be spreading, after recording about 300 suspected cases and three deaths in the neighboring North Kordofan state.
After 3 years of war, which relief organizations estimate has claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people, most of the country's hospitals are either completely or partially out of service.
