Iraqi Judiciary Recovery of 19 billion Iraqi dinars in corruption case

Khaberni - The Iraqi Higher Judiciary Council announced on Tuesday the recovery of 19 billion Iraqi dinars in a financial corruption case.

The judiciary media mentioned in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the Investigative Court specialized in integrity cases in Rusafa recovered a financial amount of 19 billion Iraqi dinars".

The statement clarified, "the amount was recovered within the investigations related to a financial corruption case involving manipulation of financial deposit statements for the Iraqi Airways".

The detentions started at dawn on Sunday with the Iraqi security forces raiding the headquarters and homes of politicians in Baghdad. The Iraqi News Agency reported on Sunday from high-level sources that "47 suspects including MPs and officials were arrested on corruption charges" including Al-Bahadli and at least 12 deputies.

However, the government spokesman Haider al-Abadi said on Monday in his weekly press conference, that the operation "Dawn Assault included the arrest of 21 suspects, while others are being pursued".

He pointed out that "the confessions made by the suspects lead to other networks at the level of names and money".

The arrests come ahead of an expected visit by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi to Washington in mid-July, which will be his first foreign visit since taking office last month and his commitment to combat corruption.
