4 people end their lives in one day in Iraq

Khaberni - Iraq witnessed on Tuesday four separate suicide cases within a few hours, including a child, in incidents that occurred between the capital Baghdad and Thi Qar province.

According to Iraqi media, the latest incident in Thi Qar province involved a 21-year-old young man who worked in one of the security sectors, ending his life by shooting himself inside his home using a pistol.

A newspaper quoted a security source saying that preliminary information suggests that the incident might be related to the fallout from a previous tribal dispute, while the relevant authorities began an investigation to fully ascertain the circumstances.

In the capital Baghdad, three other cases were recorded, where a 34-year-old woman ended her life by hanging herself inside her family's home in the Dora area, south of the capital.

Another tragic incident occurred in the Zawraa area, where a 12-year-old girl was found having ended her life in her room, while the fourth case occurred in the Ghazalia area, where a 23-year-old young woman set herself on fire using kerosene.

The security authorities reported that they had collected the bodies from the incident sites and opened separate investigations to reveal the circumstances and motives that led to these incidents.

These incidents occur amid continuing high rates of suicide in Iraq, as official statistics indicate that hundreds of cases are recorded annually in various provinces, amid increasing warnings of the psychological, social, and economic factors that contribute to exacerbating the phenomenon.

Official reports clarify that hanging, the use of firearms, and burning are among the most methods used in suicide cases while the motives vary among psychological disorders, family and social issues, economic crises, as well as the impact of drug use and psychoactive substances.

Experts believe that the announced figures may not reflect the true scale of the problem, as some families refrain from reporting suicide cases due to social stigma and the cultural and religious considerations associated with these incidents.
