Khaberni - It is expected that Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Sheibani will visit Beirut in the coming two days, on an official visit, during which he will meet a number of senior Lebanese officials, including the three presidents, the head of state, the prime minister, and the speaker of the parliament.
An official source told Al Arabiya that Al-Sheibani will discuss during his visit pending issues between Lebanon and Syria, most notably the issue of Syrian prisoners in Lebanon, and the joint borders file, in addition to ways to organize the bilateral relationship in the coming period.
The visit comes at a time when Lebanese-Syrian relations are experiencing increased activity, after the Lebanese authorities handed over two batches of convicted Syrian prisoners to Damascus, implementing a bilateral agreement signed between the two sides in February.
According to the source, the Syrian foreign minister carries a message of "reassurance" from the Syrian leadership to the Lebanese officials, confirming that there are no Syrian intentions to militarily intervene in Lebanon.
This message gains special importance given the sensitivity of the situation in Lebanon, and the security and political tensions related to the south and the borders, in addition to concerns about the implications of regional developments on the internal situation in Lebanon.
The talks are also expected to address mechanisms for controlling the borders, combating smuggling, and developing security coordination to preserve the sovereignty of both countries, alongside discussions on humanitarian and judicial files that have been pending for years.
