Khaberni - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that his country will coordinate with Iraq the mechanism for the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the holy shrines of Iraq.
"We will coordinate the mechanism for the funeral of the martyr Ali Khamenei in the holy shrines in Iraq," Araghchi added, during a joint press conference today, Sunday in Baghdad with his Iraqi counterpart Fouad Hussein, without providing further details.
The Iranian committee organizing the funeral ceremonies announced a plan spanning four days, starting on July 6 from the capital Tehran, passing through the city of Qom, and concluding with the burial in the shrine of Imam Reza in the city of Mashhad.
According to the committee, the plan includes transporting the body to Iraq on July 8, to hold funeral ceremonies in the cities of Najaf and Karbala, in response to requests from Iraqi scholars, tribes, and elites.
The official spokesman for the organizing committee of the funeral ceremonies, Iman Attar Zadeh, confirmed - a few days ago - in a press conference in Tehran, that the body will be mourned along with family members of the late Iranian leader: his son-in-law Dr. Misbah al-Huda Baqeri, his daughter Bushra Husseini Khamenei, his daughter-in-law Zahra Haddad Adel, wife of the current leader Mojtaba Khamenei, and his granddaughter Zahra Mohammadi Kalbaykani.
The spokesman specified the final burial site at the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, noting that the burial will take place on the night commemorating the death of Imam Zain ul-Abidin.
Attar Zadeh explained that the Supreme Funeral Committee was formed under the presidency of the First Vice President, and includes four specialized groups:
- The Roads and Transportation Group chaired by the Minister of Roads.
- The Security and Discipline Group.
- The International Group for Reception of Delegations.
- The Media and Cultural Group.
Role Distribution
The Revolutionary Guards will be responsible for conducting the ceremonies in Tehran, Mashhad, and Qom, while the provinces will oversee the organization in other regions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will arrange the reception of official figures from various countries, including politicians and academic and religious elites, who will come to have a final look at the body of the deceased.
The assassination of Khamenei on February 28, 2026, marked a significant turning point in the history of Iran and the region, after President Donald Trump announced his assassination in the early hours of the US-Israeli war on Iran.
