Axios US and Iran Agree to Deescalate and Settle Hormuz Dispute in Qatar

Khaberni  - Axios, quoting American officials, said that the United States has decided to stop all combat activities with Iran, following a round of mutual escalation in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz.

An American official - described by Axios as senior - said that Washington and Tehran will meet next Tuesday in Doha to settle the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz.

The site mentioned that the hotline between the US military and the Revolutionary Guard had not been activated until Saturday.

A senior American official told Al Jazeera that the technical talks to implement the memorandum of understanding with Iran had not been canceled and that they are still scheduled for the coming days, adding that the channels of conflict resolution with Iran are still in place and active following last week's talks in Switzerland.

Axios also reported that ships could move freely in the Strait of Hormuz during the technical talks.

Reasons for the Recent Escalation

This announcement comes after a round of escalation. Washington stated that the commercial ship "Kiko" was attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Following that, the US Central Command carried out strikes targeting 10 Iranian locations, said to include radar and missile platforms, unmanned aerial vehicles, and sites for the preparation of naval mines in Qeshm Island and the Serek area.

Tehran responded by targeting US military sites, including the Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, considering the US strikes to be a breach of the memorandum of understanding, while Washington insisted that they were to protect navigation freedom and prevent threats to commercial ships.

Although the strikes have stopped since dawn yesterday, the scene does not reflect the end of the crisis, according to Al Jazeera correspondent in Tehran, Omar Hawash, who confirmed that both parties are still "keeping their fingers on the trigger", amid ongoing disagreements over the fifth clause of the memorandum of understanding related to the Strait of Hormuz, which calls for the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran opposes US efforts aimed at creating alternative routes closer to the Omani side.
