How to Exercise Safely in Hot Weather

Khaberni - Environmental and health scientists warn that the rising global temperatures may push humans to reduce their physical activity, potentially resulting in hundreds of thousands of premature deaths annually by mid-century.

The physiological problem during exercising in heat is that muscles generate internal heat, prompting the body to cool itself by pumping blood to the skin to sweat, which deprives muscles of sufficient oxygen and increases the burden on the heart, leading quickly to fatigue and exhaustion.

To maintain physical activity safely, researchers scientifically recommend shifting workout times to cooler hours in the early morning or evening, and choosing shaded areas that are 12 to 15 degrees Celsius cooler compared to sunny areas.

It is also necessary to monitor humidity levels; high humidity prevents sweat evaporation and hinders the body’s natural cooling mechanism, much like the lack of air flow in enclosed spaces.

On extremely hot days, it is scientifically advised to reduce the intensity and duration of the exercise session and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded environments.

Research proves that smart cooling techniques, such as immersing hands and arms in cold water or using wet towels and rotating them around the body, are more effective than using small ice packs.

"Pre-cooling" by drinking chilled fluids before going out helps lower the body's core temperature and provides a longer thermal protection barrier.

Finally, scientists emphasize the "thermal adaptation" process that occurs when gradually exercising in the heat over a period ranging from a week to two weeks, increasing blood plasma volume and sweat rate and thus reducing the risks of stress and heat strokes.
