Khaberni - The "Finestris" foundation has opened the doors of its library dedicated to Palestine in the Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona, not only to raise awareness about the Palestinian cause but also to shed light on the rich Palestinian literature since its inception.
Palestinian writer Mohammed Beitari, who is involved in this project, said that they have named this initiative "Finestris Palestine," emphasizing that the library contains thousands of Palestinian writings in various languages, ranging from fiction and poetry to theater, and extending to history and art, according to Al Jazeera.
Beitari mentioned that the reason for opening this library began with a racist incident, and recounts: "In one of our libraries in Spain which has shelves dedicated to Palestinian books, someone came in and poured coffee over the works named after Palestine. Therefore, after long discussions at Finestris, we decided to open a library entirely dedicated to Palestine."
Regarding the role he hopes this library will play in strengthening the Palestinian cause in Europe, Beitari explained that literature in general helps preserve the cause and is not only important for assistance, but also for protecting the cause, as there is Palestinian literature that precedes the occupation.
He added that the mission of the foundation is to highlight the literature that brings together Palestinian memories and experiences both at home and abroad, and to present the Palestinian narrative to the world.
Beitari pointed out that the library has been widely acclaimed by academics, residents of the neighborhood, visitors, and the tourists who frequently visit Barcelona, in addition to the quick response from publishers and distributors working with the space operators.
Serving the Palestinian Cause
He said that the news about the opening of the first Palestinian library in Europe has resonated widely, noting that the library is visited daily by many nationalities who seek help in familiarizing themselves with Palestinian literature.
He considered that the library serves as a hub for Palestine in Barcelona, as some people know nothing about Palestine and come asking for information. He stated that their job at the library is to provide information, suggestions, and to engage with people to familiarize them with Palestine and its cause and literature.
Beitari promised - as reported by journalist Abdel Aziz Sabah - that the library will play a very important role in serving the Palestinian cause and assisting Palestinians, writers, male and female artists, pointing out that one of their main goals is for the library to be a point from which literary, educational, and awareness activities commence to serve the Palestinian cause.
