AlShawarbeh as Deputy Head of the United Cities and Local Governments Organization UCLG for the Middle East and West Asia Reg

Khaberni - Dr. Yousef Al-Shawarbeh, head of the Greater Amman Municipality committee, has been decided to be appointed as the deputy head of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) for the Middle East and West Asia region, for the period 2026-2029, after the presidential body elections of the organization, which were held during the proceedings of the Organization of Cities and Local Governments Conference and the World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders in Tangier, Morocco.

The appointment of Al-Shawarbeh, who currently holds the position of co-president of UCLG MEWA, is in recognition of his distinguished leadership, his steadfast commitment to supporting sustainable urban development, and his continuous efforts in enhancing cooperation among local administrations in the region.

The presidential body elections resulted in the election of Ugur Ibrahim Altay, Mayor of Konya, as the head of the organization for the period from 2026-2029, and the appointment of Bekele Stoofile, head of the Local Governments Association in South Africa, Aisen Nikolaev, head of the Sakha Republic, Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague, Christian Zamora, Mayor of Cuenca, and Berry Vrbanovic, Mayor of Kitchener, as co-presidents.

The new presidential body of the organization also included Fatimata Abdel Malik, head of the Nouakchott Region, as the head of the Permanent Committee for Gender Equality in the organization, and Fatihah El Mouden, Mayor of Rabat, as the Secretary of the Fund for the current session of the United Cities and Local Governments Organization.
