The draw qualifies Japan to face Brazil and Sweden snatches the thirdplace ticket Video

Khaberni - The Japanese and Swedish teams secured their qualification to the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, after a 1-1 draw imposed itself in their third-round group stage match, a result that awarded the "Samurai" the second place in the group, while ensuring Sweden's passage as one of the best third-placed teams.

The Japanese team entered the match seeking a win in hopes of competing for the top spot in the group, and dominated most of the first half, but was met with an outstanding performance by Swedish goalkeeper Jakob Videl Zetterstrom, who kept his net clean, while the Swedish team was dealt a heavy blow with the injury of their key defender Isaac Hein before the end of the first half.

Japan continued to dominate after the break, until Daizen Maeda succeeded in scoring the opening goal in the 56th minute, capitalizing on a precise pass from Ritsu Doan, marking his first international goal since September 2024.

However, the Swedish response was quick, as Anthony Elanga snatched the equalizing goal just four minutes later, after breaking down the right side and firing a wonderful left-footed shot into the net, scoring for the second consecutive game and bringing his team back into the contest.

The final minutes witnessed mutual attempts to snatch the winning goal, where Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki excelled in thwarting attempts by Alexander Isak and Elanga, while Koki Ogawa missed a precious opportunity that would have given Japan the victory, ending the match in a draw that served both teams well.

With this result, the Japanese team finished the group stage in second place, setting a fiery date with the Brazilian team, leader of the opposite group, in one of the strongest matchups of the Round of 32.

Meanwhile, Sweden continued its streak of reaching the knockout stages for the fifth consecutive time in the World Cup, having secured their qualification as one of the best third-placed teams, and now awaits to find out their next opponent as the third round of matches completes.

Attention now turns to the Japan-Brazil match, which is one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Round of 32, while Sweden hopes to continue its journey and capitalize on its late qualification to go far in the tournament.
