Khaberni - Three judges from the International Criminal Court, previously sanctioned by the Donald Trump administration, filed a complaint against the American president and other American officials, considering the measures taken against them to be illegal.
In a complaint filed in New York on Wednesday, Canadian judge Kimberly Prost, Ugandan judge Solomy Balungi Bossa, and Beninese judge Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou stated that these sanctions aimed to "exert pressure outside the judicial framework".
The Trump administration imposed sanctions on several judges of the International Criminal Court, including the Chief Prosecutor. These sanctions prevent the judges from entering the United States and freeze any real estate or financial transactions involving them within the world's largest economy.
These sanctions are largely a retaliation against the investigations conducted by the International Criminal Court, headquartered in The Hague, concerning Israel, an ally of the United States, and the arrest warrant issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2024.
The complaint filed on Wednesday states that the sanctions aimed to "punish" them and are tantamount to a "financial death sentence". It adds that "imposing these very harsh sanctions on international judges is unprecedented," and calls for their removal.
In addition to President Trump, the complaint also targets Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent.
In July of last year, a federal judge in the United States issued a ruling that halted the execution of an executive order issued by Trump, which imposed sanctions on court staff, considering it an unconstitutional violation of free speech.
The judicial decision came in response to a lawsuit filed by two human rights advocates challenging the executive order issued by Trump, which authorized economic sanctions and travel restrictions against individuals involved in the court's investigations, especially those affecting American citizens or allies like Israel.
