Khaberni - The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, reiterated his country’s stance on regional security and the necessity for it to be exclusively handled by the nations of the region. He described the memorandum of understanding signed with the American side as a "declaration of defeat for America".
The chief Iranian negotiator said during a conference in Azerbaijan at the twentieth session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States, on Wednesday: "Regional security must be guaranteed by the regional countries".
"Lebanon is very important"
He added that his country "is ready to cooperate with the regional countries based on non-interference in internal affairs and respect for sovereignty".
Furthermore, he emphasized that "a ceasefire in Lebanon is very important and of the same importance as ending the war on Iran," according to "France Press".
He considered that "the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States is a declaration of defeat for America," in his words.
These statements coincided with the announcement by Pakistan, which has been mediating between Washington and Tehran for months, of the resumption of technical talks between the two sides next week.
The American and Iranian delegations met late Sunday night in Switzerland for direct negotiations that lasted 18 hours, which were later described as positive.
It was agreed to form joint working committees to discuss several issues, notably the lifting of sanctions on Iran and the release of frozen funds abroad, in addition to the Strait of Hormuz, the war in Lebanon, and the nuclear file.
The memorandum of understanding, which included 14 clauses, stipulated the continuation of technical discussions between the two countries with the aim of reaching a final agreement within a period of 60 days, extendable upon mutual agreement.
