Khaberni - The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has decided to exempt Saudi Arabia and Iraq from the ceremonies of placing the national flag on the field during the activities preceding World Cup matches, due to the mention of the divine name in both countries' flags.
During the World Cup matches held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, large flags of the two teams are raised in each half of the field and placed on the ground while the teams line up near the center circle to recite the national anthem.
However, when the teams of Saudi Arabia and Iraq play, the flags of the two teams will be raised above the field, ensuring the continuation of the pre-match celebrations while respecting the religious sanctity of the texts written on the flags.
A FIFA spokesperson said, "As part of the enhancements introduced to the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA is implementing a new form of ceremony that primarily focuses on satisfying the fans."
He added, "When organizing these celebrations, FIFA worked closely with the participating teams to meet reasonable requests regarding the ceremonies."
Placing the flags on the ground or where they are stepped on is considered inappropriate by Muslims.
