Khaberni - Minister of Agriculture Dr. Saeb Abdel Halim Al-Kharisat signed an agreement to establish a specialized factory for packaging, grading, wrapping, and cooling potato seedlings in Hussein Bin Abdullah II Industrial City in Al-Karak Governorate with the Technical Company for Potato Seed Production, as part of the agreements for stimulating food industries in industrial cities, developmental cities, and municipalities.
Al-Kharisat explained that the project represents a strategic step towards achieving self-sufficiency in potato seedlings. Currently, the kingdom imports all its needs for seedlings from European countries, with a value exceeding 7 million dinars annually.
The project aims to establish Jordan's position as a regional center for potato seed production, benefiting from its climatic and epidemiological advantages which provide a suitable environment for producing high-quality seedlings, in alignment with the economic modernization vision and the ministry’s plan to support agricultural industries and achieve sustainable economic development. The project is expected to provide 26 job opportunities, enhance the national food security system, and support investment in value-added agricultural industries.
On its part, the Technical Company will produce potato seedlings using the latest agricultural technologies, including tissue culture and aeroponics, within a plan targeting to cover the Jordanian market's needs for potato seedlings by the second half of 2027, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Jordan's agricultural sector and reducing production costs for farmers.
